Oakham is the County Town of Rutland, which is the smallest county in England. The town sits to the west of Rutland Water, one of Europe’s largest man-made lakes and the town is nestled in the Vale of Catmose.
Although a small County Rutland has a few quirks that you will not find in other surrounding counties, did you know that Rutland does not have a MacDonald Restaurant or indeed any static speed cameras! The County was absorbed by Leicestershire in 1974, but nearly 25 years later on 1st April 1997 was granted County status again. It also has an unusual name for its local residents who are referred to as ‘Raddlemen’.
Oakham has a long legal history, with the historic Oakham Castle being the oldest English Court building that remains in continuous use – with trials having taken place since 1229.
Oakham is also well known for its educational establishments, the independent Oakham School was founded in the town in 1584.
