Duncan Nicholson Runs The London Marathon

Date Added 20.04.16

Tollers Managing Partner, Duncan Nicholson is preparing to run the London Marathon this weekend. He is adhering to a strict diet and absolutely no alcohol. Duncan is a keen runner and he regularly runs half and full marathons all over the country. But it wasn’t always the case, in fact if you had told his parents 36 years ago, that their son would run Marathons when he was 49, they would have looked at you in disbelief.

In 1981, at the age of just 13 years old Duncan was diagnosed with Cancer. It was discovered Duncan had 3 forms of Cancer: Leukaemia, Hodgkins disease and a Lymphoma. The specialist treating Duncan had never come across such a case and so they threw every treatment they could at him. Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy – you name it Duncan was treated with it. Of course in 1981 there were no support groups like there are today and there wasn’t much of a life expectancy for a sufferer of any one of these 3 cancers, never mind a teenager with all 3. Duncan admits that his prognosis was nil. Cancer is a terrible disease; chances are you have a friend or a loved one who have suffered.

Thankfully this tale has a happy ending. Duncan did survive and indeed thrived, but he has never forgotten. For the last several years he has been running and raising funds for the charity Children with Cancer.

Children with Cancer fund research, support families, raise awareness and campaign to improve the lives of young cancer patients and their families. Duncan is very passionate about giving back and he is aware not every child with cancer will get the opportunity. Children with Cancer have this startling statistic on their website:

“Almost 4,000 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK. That’s ten every day.”

It makes you go cold doesn’t it?

Duncan says: “Children with Cancer give vital support. It is so important they can continue this and carry on researching childhood cancers. That is why I am running the London Marathon, yes I love to run, but far more important to me, is to give something back that will make a difference. I was one of the lucky ones.”

Children with Cancer go on to say:

“Thanks to investment in research and treatment, survival has increased dramatically over the past 50 years and four out of five young cancer patients can be successfully treated.”

And that is why it is so important to Duncan, to Tollers, to us all, to continue to raise awareness and funds. If you would like to support Duncan and more importantly Children with Cancer, please click this link to the Virgin Money Giving page, where all the funds raised sponsoring Duncan as he runs the London Marathon, go to the charity, Children with Cancer. Thank you – it means the world!

PS Do let us know if you spot Duncan on Sunday during the televised event and if you are running or there as a spectator, give Duncan a wave!
