Acas Reports that workplace bullying is on the rise

The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) have reported that a common problem within many workplaces is bullying. It has found that many employees are afraid to speak out about workplace bullying and as a consequence, businesses are seeing a rise in bullying-related absenteeism.

What does this mean for employers?

Acas undertook a survey of workplaces within the UK and found that workplace bullying is one of the most serious growing problems that workplaces are facing.

Acas found that there are many barriers that prevent employees who are subject to such bullying to speak out and complain about what is happening to them. Many employees fear that something worse may happen if the bullying is raised with a manager, and many fear that their employer will not stop the bullying from happening.

Acas found that many managers that are made aware of bullying within their workplace, fail to introduce effective measure to ensure the bullying is stopped. Most managers will move their employees from certain departments in the hope this will stop the bullying, rather than dealing with the underlying behaviours of certain employees in the workplace.

Acas have recommended that workplaces introduce measures that set out what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour for employees to follow. They have also recommended that it is vital that employers ensure that the more senior employees set an example of acceptable behaviour among the junior employees, acting as role models for such standards of behaviour.

In introducing Anti-bulling and Anti-Harassment policies, employers will be making staff aware of the repercussions of any ill behaviour towards another member of staff.
