Duncan qualified as a solicitor in 1996 having started his legal career at Shoosmiths & Harrison in 1994.
Duncan’s career has taken him to Birmingham and to London where he worked for international legal practices before he joined Tollers as a Partner in 2006 in order to provide specialist advice on Corporate Recovery and Insolvency matters.
Duncan remains a leading advisor in the East and South Midlands to Insolvency Practitioners and businesses and individuals affected by Insolvent events.
In September 2011 Duncan was appointed as Tollers’ Managing Partner, a post he still holds today.
In his capacity as Managing Partner Duncan is responsible for the overall management of the business, as well as the maintenance of the firm’s strategy and growth plans.
Duncan led the firm to its success in the 2014 Lawyer Management Awards (Excellence and/or Innovation in a Law Firm Financial Management) where he was also a finalist in the ‘Law Firm Management Individual of the Year’ category.
In 2015 Duncan was included in The Lawyer Magazine’s ‘Hot 100’ list, which showcases outstanding talent in the legal sector. He was included within the ‘Leaders’ section for his contribution to Tollers financial improvement over the last few years and for his overall financial Management of the firm.
The Lawyer magazine stated that Mr Nicholson had “overseen one of the most dramatic reversals of fortune in the UK legal market”.

Duncan is an associate member of R3 (the Association of Insolvency Professionals). He is also a Trustee of the Tove Learning Trust and was previously a Governor at Tresham College.
Duncan’s main interests outside of his professional life centre around sport and in particular Rugby, Golf, Skiing and Football. Duncan is a keen cyclist and additionally has completed 6 marathons and several half marathons raising much needed money for charities close to his heart.
