Power of Attorney Fraudster Found Guilty

Date Added 12.12.15

On Friday 27th November Margaret Rigby was found guilty of fraud at Canterbury Crown Court, after stealing the life savings from her friend Barbara Lewis of Herne Bay.

Barbara’s son, Nick Lewis has been campaigning for a change in the law surrounding the regulation of powers of attorney and their supervision once someone has one, ever since his mother passed away and he found out about his mother’s best friends deception – whom his mother had had appointed as her attorney.

Karon Walton from Tollers said “This was a tragic case of this lady being financial abused by a person whom she had trusted, however, in my experience this is not an isolated case.  I would advise anyone considering appointing someone as their attorney to seek specialist legal advice from an accredited lawyer.  They will be able to talk through all the options and provide the advice as to the appropriate course of action”

This case made the national press and was covered on Channel 5 News where Nick was interviewed together with Karon who is Head of Tollers Elderly and Vulnerable Client Unit and a Director of Solicitors for The Elderly.  To see the full interview click on the video below.
