Date Added 10.11.16

Carlsberg, one of Northampton’s largest employers suffered an ammonia gas leak at their brewery on Wednesday 9th November.

This unfortunate incident has resulted in one employee losing his life. In total 22 people were injured. 11 are Carlsberg employees, 2 police officers and 9 firefighters.

Northamptonshire police say they will be working with the Health & Safety Executive to investigate the incident.

It is unknown whether those investigations will result in any prosecutions.

Head of Tollers Personal Injury in our Northampton office, Paul Morrison says “Our thoughts go out to those who have been affected by the Carlsberg Ammonia gas leak yesterday. We understand from our experience that it is a very difficult and worrying time for all the families involved but in particular the bereaved family.  We hope that all those involved that are still in hospital make a full recovery”.

There are strict regulations for employers to adhere to when dealing with hazardous substances such as ammonia. This includes the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. These COSHH Regulations require employers to assess the risk to their employees, and to prevent or adequately control that risk.

Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen. As a gas, it is colourless with a characteristic pungent smell.

In a BBC NEWS article, Julian Momen, Chief Executive Officer of Carlsberg UK, said : “ We are deeply, deeply saddened by today’s tragic incident and subsequent fatality”. He went on to say “Nothing is more important to us than the safety of everyone working for us. We are working closely with the authorities to investigate how this tragic incident occurred and we will be in a position to say more once a full investigation has been concluded”.

Hopefully this leak has been contained and there will be no further incidents. However, if you are near the premises of Carlsberg in Bridge Street, Northampton and smell ammonia please move away quickly and report the smell to the authorities.
