Getting Involved In The Milton Keynes Community
Lunch is served…
On Wednesday 20th June 2018, volunteers from Tollers’ charity committee put on their aprons to assist with the lunch club at Age UK Milton Keynes’ Peartree Centre in Milton Keynes.
The lunch club at the modern Peartree Centre is run by a paid Cook and her team of regular volunteers who have an excellent rapport with members of the club and makes for a very friendly and welcoming environment.
Our team started the day by setting tables for lunch, then greeting members when they arrived from 10am in the minibuses. Helen Capel, Natalie La Forte-Brown and Will Grisley were kept busy helping people to their tables, making them a hot drink and having a chat. Will, Trainee Solicitor, particularly enjoyed chatting to Harry who is 93 years old. Harry had joined the RAF in 1942 and had some very interesting stores to tell of his time as an engineer working on Spitfires.
There was then time to help some members with word-searches and Bingo before helping to serve lunch at noon.
On the menu was breaded fish, potatoes, vegetables and parsley sauce, followed by fruit and custard. Judging by the clean plates, this was a popular choice!
Andy, one of the regular volunteers said “Helen, Natalie and Will were like part of the team. They were really good”. That’s a huge compliment but reflects how much our volunteers enjoyed their time helping this fantastic charity and we hope to visit again soon.
Our volunteers were also delighted to deliver a number of sacks of clothing and bric-a-brac for Age UK Milton Keynes’ charity shops, which were donated by Tollers’ staff.
Age UK Milton Keynes run 7 lunch clubs each week at venues in the Milton Keynes borough where older people can socialise and meet with friends, whilst enjoying a freshly cooked hot lunch.
