Safeguarding is the term given to the process of protecting a person’s health and well-being from harm, abuse and neglect. All people should be capable of living their lives in a safe environment, keeping them free from harm, abuse and neglect.

Many organisations will have their own policies and procedures for dealing with safeguarding issues or concerns, including Solicitors, Care Agencies, Schools and Local Authorities. If you have concerns that a vulnerable person may be at risk of suffering harm to their health, lifestyle or finances, it is essential that you know where to turn to protect their interests.

Getting Help

As mentioned above, Local Authorities will likely have a safeguarding referral procedure in place for both adults and children. This involves making a report through their processes to raise your concerns that a vulnerable person may be at risk. Social Services can then take their own steps to investigate the matter and to involve any other relevant persons if harm or abuse is discovered (for example the Police, the Court of Protection or the Office of the Public Guardian).

Several Charitable organisations can also assist and support in cases of suspected abuse and to provide advice on safeguarding measures.

Safeguarding is an effective way to look out for and protect those who are most vulnerable and to allow them to maintain their rights, freedom and dignity.

Financial Abuse

One common area in which abuse or harm is usually detected first is in relation to a person’s finances. This can be easier to spot and to deal with than mental, verbal, emotional or physical abuse of a vulnerable person, as it usually leaves some paper trail.

Some signs of financial abuse include:

  • Missing valuables from the home (e.g jewellery, ornaments or art work).
  • Deliberate isolation from friends and family.
  • Income missing or unaccounted for.
  • Suspicious payments to third parties.
  • Lack of food or amenities in the house.
  • Lack of clothing or personal items where the person has sufficient funds.
  • Sudden changes in bank accounts or legal documents (e.g Wills).
  • Unexplained cash withdrawals or asset transfers.
  • Unpaid bills.
