Who is a Notary?

A Notary is a qualified lawyer – a member of the third and oldest branch of the legal profession in England & Wales. They are appointed by the Court of Faculties of the Archibishop of Canterbury. 

What does a Notary do?

A Notary can deal with all non-contentious legal matters but generally the main function of a Notary is to authenticate documents, transactions, events and people. Once notarised a document is internationally recognised as proof of its contents and facts stated.

What qualifications does a Notary have?

A Notary is a solicitor, barrister or graduate (not necessarily in law) who has obtained the additional qualification of a Diploma in Notarial Practice and a Faculty from the Court of Faculties.
 
A Notary must hold a valid practising certificate, have in place adequate professional indemnity insurance and comply with the conduct rules of the profession.
