DePuy Hip Replacement Recall
“Thousands of patients left in agony by faulty hip replacement”
The Independent , Sunday 12th September 2010
On the 26th August 2010 DePuy Orthopaedics part of the global giants Johnson and Johnson issued a product recall on two types of its hip replacements. A recall on an electrical product people might expect, but on an artificial hip it will come as great concern to many people. Especially, if you’re one of the 8,000 people in the UK who’ve had a DePuy product fitted.
Most patients will not be aware of what make of hip joint was used during their surgery, so how do you know if this recall applies to you? The two products are the ASR XL Acetabular System, which is a metal on metal total hip replacement and, the Hip Resurfacing System, which seems to have been used on younger patients to preserve more of the hip joint.
Hospitals should be writing out to affected patients over the forthcoming weeks but, if you have concerns you should contact the hospital where you had your hip replacement carried out to clarify what product was used.
DePuy have recalled these products after extensive research carried out by recognised medical authorities, not only in the UK, but also Australia and the US. This research showed that there was a significantly higher failure rate on these products compared to other similar products on the market.
Given that DePuy knew about these risks since 2007 but continued to sell the products, affected patients may have a claim against them for compensation.
