We all now recognise asbestos as a dangerous material. However, for a long time it was regarded as very useful and inadequate protective measures were taken for people working with it, even when the dangers had become known. The asbestos fibres can be breathed in and any one of them can spark off a reaction which can cause these diseases and ultimately death.
