Urgent recall notice re Metal on Metal Hip Implants – DePuy R3 metal liners

On 25/6/12 Smith & Nephew issued a recall notice recalling all R3 metal liners  used in resurfacing and total hip femoral components.  Smith & Nephew say that 281 patients in the UK have this product.  This is the second recall of a metal on metal hip component with DePuy recalling the ASR product in August 2010.  The research shows that there is a high revision rate of 6.3% at 4 years and this revision rate is not inline with the current guidance from NICE.

The advice given is the same as that for all metal on metal hip implants. Your surgeon should arrange for a blood test to check the levels of cobalt and chromium. Where levels are above 7ppb there could be a reaction with the soft tissues and bone around the implant.  Further blood tests should be carried out  3 months later. If they remain high an MRI or ultrasound scan is performed.  In addition if there is pain and discomfort in the joint you should discuss possible revision.

Tollers are involved in the group litigation to assist a group of people who have been afflicted by problems arising from failed DePuy hip implants. To read other blogs on this subject click here.
