Default Retirement Age of 65 to End
30/07/2010Well, employment law has changed again! The government has announced that it will be removing the default retirement age of 65. This will be a phased plan starting from April 2011. Which will mean that as of 1st October 2011 employers won't be able to compulsorily retire employees without objective justification, so please bear this in mind if you start serving your 12 months notice this October this year or 6 months notice in April next year to retire in October 2011, as it won't be legal.
As to what reasons will count towards objective justification for retirement, we'll just have to wait and see what the Employment and Employment Appeals Tribunals decide!
