Faulty Hip Implants

23/09/2010

A recent article in the Independent highlighted the serious health issues facing those effected by a faulty implant used in hip replacement operations.  The article stated, “Tens of thousands of patients are being recalled to hospital because of a faulty hip implant that has caused tumours, tissue erosion and a build up of metal debris.”

The problem seems to have arisen because of underperformance of the ASR metal resurfacing implants which are used in hip replacements. At the end of last month the manufacturers, DePuy, a division of Johnson and Johnson, issued a global market recall of these products. However, one has to wonder why they waited so long.  The Australian National Joint Replacement Registry reported serious problems with the implants as long ago as 2007.

Surgeons across the UK will be re-examining about 8,000 patients in the coming weeks to determine if they are affected. Some people have already had to undergo a second hip replacement operation to have the faulty implant replaced.

If you, or someone you know has been suffering pain after a hip replacement operation you should consult your GP in the first instance.
